In a recent dispute between Warner Bros. and the Tolkien estate, the online UK slots had to pull their Lord of the Rings slots game that came out in 2010 over whether Warner Bros had the right to use the characters from Tolkien’s Lord of the Ring books or not.
The Battle
A five-year long court battle over the use of the characters in Tolkiens books has finally been resolved when all the parties finally reached a court settlement recently.
The slot machines were actually out on the market two years before they estate lawyer for Tolkien was alerted in 2012, of their existence from an email. As a result, the Lord of the Rings slot games were removed from the market causing Warner to lose millions of dollars.
Tolkien’s estate along with the publisher HarperCollins sued Warner for 80 million dollars in 2012.
According to Tolkien’s estate, the studio never had had the rights to license the characters to the gaming company. Microgaming had legitimately gotten a licensing deal from Warner previous to the lawsuit, but it was unclear if Warner had the rights actually to grant that license in the first place. Eventually, Warner countersued on the grounds of all the money they had lost since the games were removed from Casinos everywhere.
Resolution
Although details have not been released a Tolkien estate attorney told the New York Times that the case had been resolved and all parties are pleased with the results. Online UK Slots have lost a lot of money the past five years over this issue.
